Ballymackey Women had a great win on the road in Laois, overcoming Mountmellick United 0-2 in Conor Davis Park. Ballymackey took a while to settle into the game but by the mid point of the first half they were starting to exert pressure on the home sides goal and forced a succession of corners. Kate Cavanaghs pinpoint delivery was causing mayhem in the Mountmellick box. Aoibhín Delaney had a great header just kept out by a super save, before Lisa Toohey rose highest to power home another inviting delivery from Kate. Mountmellick were dangerous on the break and Ballymackey had to scramble in defence on a couple of occasions to maintain a lead to half time. A very lively start from Ballymackey to the second half saw them create some great opportunities. Laura Kavanagh was having a huge impact raiding down the left wing and 10 minutes in Laura crossed from the endline and Allison McDonnell steered the ball in at the back post to put Ballymackey 2 clear. A disciplined performance from there saw Ballymackey control the remainder of the match, though it took a top class save from Mollie Ryan from a great strike with 3 minutes remaining for Ballymackey to maintain their 2 goal cushion. Excellent effort from the girls against a good Mountmellick side that are hard to beat at home. We had stand out performances from Niamh O Brien, Laura Kinsella and our player of the match Lisa Toohey.
