Ballymackey U12'S travelled to Castle United (near Killmallock) today for their first round fai cup game.
The game started off in a high tempo with both sides threatening to score. After around ten minutes the home team broke the deadlock and Ballymackey had to push harder now to get back into the game. This didn't take long though with Jack Fitzpatrick getting on the end of a brilliant move which started from our goalie Michael Ryan. We went three at the back and pressed high most of the day and this brought great rewards because we were 3-1 up at half time thanks to Jack Fitzpatrick with two goals and Patrick Hackett with a neat goal. Our high press did catch us out however in the second half as the home side got one back making it 3-2 in our favour with 20 minutes still to play. We then went 4-2 up thanks another brilliant goal from Jack Fitzpatrick giving him his hat trick!! It was looking good over the next few minutes and we might have even got another but for a fine save from the Castle United goalie. The home team were putting up a big fight at this stage and got their rewards with a penalty kick bringing the score to 4-3. We got back on top after that but couldn't find the net when disaster struck and a fluky goal went in from a deflection in which no one could do anything about. It was now 4-4 and it stayed this way until the final whistle. Next came extra time and we decided to press as high as we could to try and score first. This gamble paid off and we got our goal and what turned out to be the winner from Cody Quirke. This was the least Cody deserved as he caused them problems throughout and came close a few times. The fitness of our lads told true in the end because we just out ran the opposition and kept control until the whistle blew for full time.
This was a fantastic win for us with everyone playing their heart out.
Michael Ryan was outstanding in goals and kept us in it loads of times with brilliant saves. Ryan Moloney Liam Hackett and Cormac Frend were our three at the back all three were up and down the pitch all day causing havoc for the opposition. We had Shane Conway, Patrick Hackett, Cody Quirke, Max Swan and Jack Fitzpatrick in midfield all of these putting in big shifts. We had Darragh Hartnett and Patrick O'Brien up front both of whom worked very hard.
It would be unfair to single anybody out here as so many stood up today.
