U14 Shield Final V Arra Rovers
Our 14 Girls played Arra Rovers in the Shield final yesterday evening in Ballinree.
Conditions were poor for the game, with wind and rain coming from everywhere! As expected the game took off at 100 miles an hour with both sides looking to gain the upper hand. Ballymackey definitely got the better of their opponents in the opening quarter and were rewarded with a goal when the inform Amy Keogh got onto the end of a cross to finish nicely to the Arra net! It looked good for the home side as we had our tails up. This didn't last much longer however! Arra made a few changes in defence which had a big impact on the rest of the game. They were now on top of us and creating their own chances. A miss kick from us to the wrong player Allanah O'Carroll who hit an stunning shot from 18yrds into the top corner of Katie Hartnett's goal. Game on again!!
The game ebbed and flowed from here with both sides having plenty of chances. No more goals came and it went to extra time. Our girls were now out on their feet with the effort they were putting in. Extra time came and went with both sides just too stubborn for each other. Penalties it was!! Our five girls to step up were, Holly, Amy, Katie, Anna and Molly. We scored our first 4 and Arra missed 2 meaning we won!! Our panel today was Katie Hartnett, Alicia Darcy, Kate McGrath, Molly O'Brien, Holly Fitzpatrick, Eva Bailey, Maeve Quinn, Amy Keogh, Anna Gleeson, Lily Dunne, Lily Murphy, Caoimhe Manley, Amy-Louise O'Dwyer, Aisling Ryan, Elsa Fitzgerald and Telma Sanz Irusta. I couldn't say enough about the spirit in which our girls played. Our keeper Katie kept us in the game time and again. Our backs gave all they had and ran themselves into the ground. The girls in midfield were unbelievable, each working harder than the next. The girls upfront gave everything also. This was by far the best performance this team has given to date. It was hard to see how they kept going under such pressure. Arra for their part were equally as good. This game was completely even. It is always tough when it goes to penalties and it's a pure lottery. Having said that, we were very proud with the manner in which our girls stood up and took one.
It was nice to come away with the win. Hats off to Arra for a great game and thanks to the referee and his officials for doing a super job!
Up Ballymackey 💪💪
