Ballymackey Women’s are through to the Combined Counties Football League Women’s Cup Final following a 4-1 Semifinal win over Mountmellick United in Ballinree. The scoreline does not tell the story of what was a tight competitive match. The game started as it went on with both sides going for it and playing at a high tempo. The pace of play in the first half in particular was immense with the football of a high quality all the more impressive with time on the ball at a premium with both sides closing down players and space very quickly. Mountmellick took the lead on 35 minutes when they fired home after Ballymackey failed to clear a corner having had 3 attempts to do so. The home side reached well to the set back to equalise 5 minutes later. Christine O Keefe was played in behind the centre of the visitors back line and she chose to strike early rather than draw in the outcoming keeper and finished to the roof of the net from the edge of the box. The second half started in a similar vein with both sides creating chances, Darra Bourke produced one super save to deny Mountmellick the lead goal. The all important next goal went to Ballymackey 15 minutes into the half. Kate Cavanaghs corner delivery was only partially cleared and Karen Hogan slammed the ball into the top right corner from 12 yards. Ballymackey managed the game well from this stage and put some distance between the sides with the goal of the match. Seonaid McGuigan put Hazel Cawley in behind the Mountmellick rearguard with a sublime through ball and Hazel from left of goal unleashed a unstoppable drive into the bottom right hand corner. Ballymackey scored a 4th in the dying minutes of the match to put a very flattering look to the scoreboard when Lisa Toohey curled the ball past the visitors keeper from 25 yards. It was a outstanding performance from the Ladies in a match that was a terrific advertisement for Women's Football with huge physicality and skill on display by both sides. Very pleasing to see the girls learn from recent setbacks to manage a game from a winning position. It was the best performance from team in the last while, with the intensity and effort been put in at training transferring onto the playing pitch. Great to have a big day out in the Combined Counties Football League Cup Final to look forward to to round out the Season.
